About this course

Your reports are scrutinised. Your findings must withstand legal challenge. Yet most professionals receive no formal training in report writing.

This one-day professional report writing course will ensure attendees fully understand what is involved in writing a report. You will consider the content of reports by considering the source and weight of evidence to be included, and learning to distinguish between facts, inferences and opinions. You will also consider the process of report writing, including grammar, layout, format and style. You will receive a model format which can be adapted to suit the field and context that is required.

Attendees are required to share a copy of a final report from a completed case in advance of the training. You will receive feedback on your report from an experienced lawyer trainer and from the other delegates on the day.

Why choose this course

Often reports are written in a format or style that makes them difficult to read so that their impact is lost. Many reports fail to identify and deal with the issues in the case. The Professional Report Writing course allows both new and experienced report writers to look at how they are writing reports. It includes analysing style, grammar and layout, and aims to improve the standards of their report writing.

This one-day course gives you the skills to produce clear, credible reports that withstand legal scrutiny. You'll learn by doing: writing reports, receiving expert feedback, and developing templates you can use immediately.

Common issues addressed in this course include:

Reports that fail to identify and deal with key issues.

Poor structure making them difficult to read and reducing impact.

Confusion between facts, inferences, and opinions.

Inconsistent formatting and grammar undermining credibility.

Reports that cannot stand up to cross-examination.

FAQs

A professional report writing course teaches participants how to prepare clear, structured and evidence-based reports for legal, regulatory and business purposes. It focuses on presenting facts accurately, distinguishing between evidence and opinion, and producing reports that can withstand scrutiny in tribunals, investigations or court proceedings.

This course is suitable for investigators, compliance officers, healthcare professionals, local authority staff, auditors, regulatory inspectors and any professional responsible for producing reports for hearings, disciplinary procedures, tribunals or legal proceedings.

Well-written reports help decision-makers understand the evidence, findings and conclusions of an investigation. Poorly structured reports can undermine credibility, create ambiguity and weaken the effectiveness of evidence during legal or regulatory scrutiny.

Participants learn how to structure reports effectively, analyse evidence, distinguish facts from opinions, improve grammar and clarity, maintain audit trails, use professional language and prepare reports suitable for legal or regulatory review.

Facts are verifiable pieces of evidence, inferences are logical conclusions drawn from evidence, and opinions are professional interpretations or assessments. Understanding the distinction is essential for producing credible and defensible reports in legal and regulatory contexts.

Yes. Professional report writing training helps attendees prepare reports that may later be examined in court, tribunals or disciplinary hearings. Participants learn how legal professionals assess reports and how documentation may be challenged during cross-examination.

Common issues include poor structure, unclear language, inconsistent formatting, unsupported conclusions, confusing opinion with fact, and failing to address the key issues in the case. These problems can reduce the impact and reliability of a report.

Yes. Attendees are typically asked to submit a completed report in advance and receive feedback from experienced legal trainers and other participants. The course also includes practical exercises and templates that can be used immediately in the workplace.

Clear and accurate reports support fair decision-making, improve accountability and strengthen organisational compliance processes. Effective reporting also assists organisations in demonstrating procedural fairness and maintaining reliable evidence records.

Yes. Many professionals who produce reports for investigations, HR matters, regulatory bodies or internal audits are not legally trained. Report writing training helps non-lawyers understand legal expectations and communicate findings clearly and objectively.
