About this course
Are you aware that professional regulators are always looking for more of their members to step forward as expert witnesses?
Having enough experts is essential to prevent delays in fitness to practise and other inquiries. The limited number of experts currently available across the professions is contributing to severe delays in concluding inquiries by regulators of the statutory professions (such as pharmacy, medicine, law etc.).
We at La Touche Training have three decades of experience in training professionals to serve as expert witnesses, and over a decade’s experience of working closely with professional regulators on their disciplinary inquiries. We offer a 1-day intensive session for experts who wish to provide reports and evidence for fitness to practise and other disciplinary inquiries.

- Duties of an expert witness.
- Background to being an expert witness in professional regulation:
- The goals of statutory regulation of professionals.
- Understanding what is meant by ‘acting in the public interest.’
- Processes for complaints against members of regulated professions, and related fitness to practise/disciplinary inquiries.
- Fair procedures and due process requirements.
- The role of preliminary proceedings (where applicable).
- Grounds for complaints and disciplining of professionals.
- Your briefing letter – what it should contain.
- Bias and conflicts of interest.
- Preparing to write an expert report.
- Your report content and structure.
- Stages of giving evidence.
- Preparation for giving evidence.
- Tips for presenting evidence, answering questions and handling cross-examination.
